Part of the inspiration for creating this site is to share my experiences as I move from the big city to the big woods. The long term project plan is to build a small self sustaining, off the grid cabin in the Tennessee woods. Solar, water catchment, maybe ever a small windmill. I have numerous friends who live in and around a queer intentional community called Short Mountain, which has been around since the 1970’s. There seems to be a movement happening of queer folk moving “back to the land” and away from the big city, so it’s both exciting and daunting prospect at the same time..
In the meantime, in September I’ll be moving from the semi-sustainable big city of Chicago to the not so green city of Murfreesboro, TN for a short time, while I work on the cabin project. So here are a few shots of the bungalow I’ll be renting. The location is on the edge of town and close to a forest preserve with a lot of wildlife and away from the suburban sprawl which makes up most of Murfreesboro. It’s the fastest growing city in the state, but it has a long way to go to embrace green ideas and concepts. The bungalow is part of an old intentional community called Flatrock which is not in existence any more, although a few people still live there and are fixing the myriad of houses up to rent out. It’s still a month away from being ready but it’s actually nicer than the pictures show. There’s a composting toilet, a shower, a wood stove and lots of light, which i really like! I find that I am easily adaptable to my surroundings and I manage to make a cozy home wherever I am..
